Three people including two police officers died and two others injured in two separate road accident along Lilongwe-Salima road in Dowa on Wednesday night.

The first accident involved a Toyota Hilux that hit a stationary truck and overturned, killing all two passengers (the police officers) on the spot.

According to Dowa Police Public Relations Officer Richard Kaponda, the two police officers died due to multiple head injuries while the driver escaped unhurt.

Kaponda identified the deceased as Sub Inspector Lusungu Munthali and Sergeant Febbie Nkhata all from National police headquarters in Lilongwe.

He said few minutes later, another accident took place at the same place (Chingondo Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Chiwere), where a Toyota Hiace Minibus registration number DZ 2341 also with two passengers on board hit the same stationery vehicle.

“The two passengers were severely injured and were rushed to Salima District Hospital for treatment, while the driver who fell unconscious was pronounced dead upon arrival at the health facility,” explained Kaponda identifying the driver as 44 year-old Ephraim Mphale from Mwale village T/A Khombeza in Salima.

Kaponda said the stationary ERF truck which was facing the Salima direction had a break down but the driver did not put any road sign to alert other road users.

The driver of the truck, John Sou has since been arrested and will appear in court soon to answer charges of causing death by reckless driving.
