Listen to this article

crimeArmed robbers on Monday night killed the head teacher of Namiwawa Private Primary School in Blantyre after a vain hunt for cash.

The deceased, George Maluwa, 40, from Pitala Village, Traditional Authority

(T/A) Mpama in Chiradzulu, was found dead in the early hours of Tuesday at his residence in Namiwawa.

Southern Region police spokesperson Nicholas Gondwa said yesterday an unknown number of thugs invaded Maluwa’s house. They grabbed and tied him.

They also took away all the phones.

Said Gondwa: “[The robbers] gagged his mouth and nose and took him to his office; broke it and three computers were stolen in the process. Probably because of suffocation, he collapsed and fell down.”

He added that the thieves then went to Maluwa’s wife and asked whether her husband was epileptic because he had collapsed.

When the wife went there, the thugs escaped, according to Gondwa.

Police are hunting for the suspects.

Maluwa’s body was taken from the College of Medicine mortuary in Blantyre yesterday afternoon for a church service at Likhubula CCAP en route to his home at Mbulumbuzi in Chiradzulu, according to a statement posted on Namiwawa Private School Facebook page.

Burial is scheduled for today and the school has since closed until next Monday when classes are scheduled to resume.
