Thunder eye historic win over Diamonds

Thunder Queens are hoping for a historic win over Kukoma Diamonds on Sunday at Blantyre Youth Centre (BYC) as the two giants face off in crunchy Rainbow Paint Southern Region Netball League (SRNL) encounter.

Thunder Queens, formerly MTL Queens, are yet to register a victory over the Airtel Money Netball champions in over six years, but Queens’ coach Christina Mkwanda-Nsinji yesterday said they would like to finally put Diamonds’ dominance to an end.

“We have suffered defeats at the hands of Diamonds for too long and we would like to finally banish this curse. We have maintained last season’s squad, but we have changed our tactics so as to achieve our goals,” she said.

But Diamonds assistant coach Noel Mussa, whose side was previously known as Escom Sisters, said they will not let Queens shatter their dream of unbeaten run in the 12-team league.

“If they want to beat us, they should probably wait for next season because we have planned to win all our league games in 2016,” he said.

SRNL fixtures will start tomorrow in Mulanje where hosts Chitakale Sisters are expected to face Young Professionals and Alliance Capital Stars, according to SRNL general secretary Annie Hanjahanja-Billie.

On Sunday, the Thunder Queens versus Diamonds match will follow the one between Tigresses and Chilomoni Sisters.  In the morning, the game between Chilomoni Sisters and Alliance Capital Stars will precede the Gerald Tasaukadala versus Prison Sisters affair. n
