Thunders roar at South volleyball finals

VTC Thunders roared to a fine victory over Chanco at the Blantyre Youth Centre (BYC) on Saturday to win the title of the Southern Region Volleyball League (SRVL).

After staying for about a year without participating in any a competition due to lack of sponsored contests, Thunders relived their glorious days when they overcame Chanco 3-0 in the finals of the self-sponsored contest.

Through the likes of Khuma Kauwa, Roy Hausi and Dokiso Mkalipe, the side looked primed to win the match as they forced Chanco on the back-foot with consistent serves and awesome smashes.

After losing the first set and realising that they had little chances of holding the serves, Chanco marched back into contention with a different approach of unorthodox attacks, but they could not spill the blood of the Thunders who counterattacked with all guns blazing.

“We found inspiration in the serves. Our opponents could not easily break our serves and we took advantage of that to punish them,” said Thunders senior player James Mangani after the game.

But Chanco’s vice-captain Blessings Magombo attributed the defeat to poor coordination during the match.
