Thyolo district health officer Dr. Andrew Likaku on Monday said the district is optimistic it will reach its target of testing at least 12 000 people in the ongoing HIV Counselling and Testing (HCT) Week.

In an interview with Malawi News Agency (Mana), Likaku said the turnout has so far been impressive as more people now want to know their sero-status.

Said Likaku: “We started preparatory meetings in April this year and a lot of stakeholders worked with us throughout. There were a lot of discussions with different people with influence in the district to convince other members to come and get tested.”

Likaku said 43 HTC sites have been established in Thyolo to cater for everyone across all age groups.

“We are targeting to test 12 000 people and we are certain we will reach our target looking at the early patronage.”

Likaku also appealed to couples to go for testing during the week to enable them to know
their sero-status and plan their future together.
