Tigers show their defensive mettle

Listen to this article

Stubborn Azam Tigers shrugged off Big Bullets to a 0-0 draw at Kamuzu Stadium where the Kau Kaus made it four TNM Super League opening games without conceding.

Substitute Ian Chinyama spurned two clear-cut opportunities; first hesitating, kicking his own heels then stumbling on the ball which Tigers defenders had spilled past their own goalkeeper Nenani Juwayo.

Chinyama again accidentally blocked a goal-bound shot from a teammate before the Bullets substitute’s other shot was also blocked by the John Dzimbiri and Bashir Maunde-marshalled defence.

Another Bullets substitute Welani Nyirenda dragged his header wide when meeting Dalitso Sailesi cross on a frustrating afternoon for Bullets who missed the services of injured Fischer Kondowe, Gabadinho Mhango on yellow-card suspension and Diverson Mlozi who is at school.

Bullets were lucky to escape the punishment for their wastage as Isaac Maluwa smashed his rising shot again the far corner of the bar. Tigers also had, just like Bullets, a goal disallowed for offside.

Tigers assistant coach McDonald Yobe faulted officiation.

Bullets coach Eddington Ng’onamo admitted that the absence of Kondowe, Mlozi and Gabadinho affected their play.
