Tigresses, Thunder in grudge tie

Tigresses face in-form Thunder Queens tomorrow in a must-win clash at Blantyre Youth Centre (BYC) in Rainbow Paints Blantyre and Districts Netball League (BDNL).

Thunder Queens are third with six points following three wins and a loss while Tigresses are eighth on the 10-team log-table with two points from a win and two losses, one of which came from docked points due to failure to fulfil their fixture against Prison Sisters.

Tigresses and Thunder in a previous encounter

The two sides last met in the league five months ago in the final round of the 2017 season when Tigresses triumphed 45-41 in a controversial match that saw their respective goal shooter Sindi Simtowe-Msowoya and goal defender Joana Kachilika sent off and suspended for five games each after engaging in a fight.

Now that the two players are eligible to make a return into the netball court, the impending encounter promises to be a scintillating showdown.

“This is a very important match for us and we are geared to put up a gallant fight, knowing a win is a must for us to move some steps up the log table,” said Tigresses coach Peace Chawinga Kaluwa, whose other experienced players such as Beatrice Mpinganjira, Ellen Chiboko and Licy Fiwa are available for selection.

Nevertheless, her Thunder Queens’ counterpart Christina Mkwanda-Nsinji yesterday said they have left no stone unturned to avoid a second consecutive defeat by the Tigresses.

“All our players are in good shape for this encounter and we will not let Tigresses beat us again in the league. This time around, we are more confident of ending Tigresses’ dominance because we knew about this fixture two weeks ago and we have been preparing for it since,” she said.

Apart from Kachilika, Queens will also bank their hopes for a victory on the likes of centre Thandie Galeta-Saenda and goal shooter Emily Jere.

In other matches at the BYC, defending champions and leaders Kukoma Diamonds are hoping to take their tally to five-straight wins as they take on Machinjiri Sisters while fourth-placed Serenity Star face bottom-placed Polytechnic Sisters. Shizaella Queens will also be up against Chilomoni Sisters.
