People’s Tribunal

Time to listen to promises that itch ears

Listen to this article

I hear a week in politics, honourable judge, is as long as a year and things change easily.

In politics, especially that of Nyasaland, my lord, you learn never to take the outburst from political leaders hook, line and sinker as some gospel that can bring salvation to the citizens.

Take, for instance, the statements the Yellow Party, which is being led by Given, made on the campaign trail. I hear Given is now advancing that this country needs laptops which will be supplied in abundance to every citizen as soon as the Yellow Party and People’s Demagogic Party (PDP) form the next government if they win fresh elections.

A party that previously been in the forefront of Nyasaland’s frontline politics has for convenience allowed itself to be in the armpits of PDP, consequently handing over its political capital to its benefactor.

By the end of the tripartite elections lessons, the president of the Yellow Party could not even manage to win a seat in his home base. His erstwhile stronghold was donated to PDP as the party of Chairman was reduced to a proverbial briefcase entity that was kept in a house with torn curtains.

It was like a case of a chief surrendering the chieftaincy; including wives and concubines, to a settler he was in cahoots with.

True, My Lord, Given’s party had been used, abused and thrown away like a banana skin but should the prospects of ruling again drive one to go into the archives of strange promises just to woo voters?

We all remember “the shoes for all and citizens’ sizes” narrative, which Chairman reportedly concocted and denied in equal measure. We know politicians are desperate for votes but I don’t this is the time to throw every junk of unrealistic promise at the electorate.

Everyone knows what this country needs; a sound health delivery system, a well-oiled economic apparatus and a development structure that eradicates poverty at a remarkable speed and of course governance that is devoid of corruption and abuse.

My Lord, I know selective amnesia is a serious pandemic in politics but you have to admire the courage of an abused wife who buys the sweet-nothings of reform from a serial liar who says he will never beat you up, yet he just wants you to bear him another child.

I think Yellow Party should sit down with PDP to find a common agenda they should sell to the electorate instead of saying anything. My Lord, today I am not talking about the moon that Lazaro and Sauli are also promising people because their time will come. Unfortunately the laptop record from Yellow Party was too loud to ignore.

Well I know your courts are in a lockdown, hence, I will not sue them for peddling lies but I thought you should know politicians of this type.

Regards,

John Citizen
