Newly established private television station Times TV has launched Malawi’s first reality show—a dance competition.

Dubbed Ka Jive, the show will be a streetwise dance contest aimed at spurring new creative ways of dancing that is unique to Malawi.

“Ka Jive is a reality television initiative of Times Television – Malawi’s first independent TV station. Our ultimate goal is to encourage dancers to come up with authentic dance routines that are Malawian in feel, touch, and smell. South Africans and Nigerians are known for a certain way of dancing. We want to define a unique dance routine for Malawi through Ka Jive,” said Dumisani Ngulube, group chief commercial officer and head of programmes.

The first season kicked off over the weekend with auditions in Blantyre where over 50 contestants battled out and 12 were shortlisted. They will be announced next week.

“The concept is that we will be holding weekly shows where the contestant with the least votes from the viewers will be evicted until the final three contestants. “Each week will have its own surprises to keep the contestants on their toes. The winner walks away with K1 million and scholarship at TechnoBrain,” explained Ngulube.

He said the competition has no age restrictions.

“Anyone who thinks Ka Jive kake kali hottie can join regardless of age, gender, colour shape and size. They can enter as individuals or groups,” he said.

Evictions will be through SMS voting with three judges only there to provide critic. Said Ngulube: “It will be up to Malawi to keep their favourite act in or out of the race. The event will be recorded and broadcast weekly on Times TV through a 45 minutes programme.

“It’s about time Malawians enjoyed local reality TV shows. Ka Jive is here to stay. We look forward to many exciting seasons ahead. Look out for more reality and life changing shows right here on Times TV.”

The judges are DJ Kenny Klips, Sam Kabambe of Times TV and Zsazsa Mponda.

The hosts of the show are Blak Jak and Mayuri Patel.
