Telekom Networks Malawi (TNM) Limited on Friday handed over a K13 million double classroom block to Ekwendeni Community Day Secondary School (CDSS) in Mzimba and medical equipment worth K6 million to St John’s Hospital in Mzuzu.

Speaking at the donation, TNM chief officer of consumer services Daniel Makata said TNM is committed to supporting the country’s education and health sectors.

He said this year, TNM Mpamba Trust is targeting to make K240 million donations to the education and health sectors, among other areas and that so far, the trust has made donations worth over K160 million.

“The money we are using to build schools blocks and buy health equipment is your money from Mpamba transactions. When you use Mpamba, the money goes into a bank account and accumulates interest. We decided that the interest should be used for such projects,” said Makata.

Ekwendeni CDSS head teacher Themba Chirwa commended TNM Mpamba Trust for building the school block, saying it will help ease pressure on existing facilities at the school.

St John’s Hospital principal administrator Charity Chinkono also thanked TNM for the donation.

“Sometimes we are forced to refer cases to Mzuzu Central Hospital not because we cannot handle such cases, but because we do not have the equipment,” she said.
