The Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development has announced that tomorrow, December 26, is a public holiday this year; hence, the public should observe the day as such.

The ministry made the announcement in a statement containing approved 2015 public holidays in Malawi which does not include December 26 2015 as a public holiday. The statement has been signed by the ministry’s principal secretary Kester Kaphaizi on Monday.

December 26, popularly known as Boxing Day, was delisted from the list of public holidays by former president the late Bingu wa Mutharika on the basis that the country had too many holidays most of which were counterproductive.

However, the day was restored as a public holiday again in 2012 by Mutharika’s successor and his former estranged Vice-President Joyce Banda.
