When you read the international press, you get the impression that Malawians have no admirers among the glitterati out there.

But the country, popularised by US pop diva Madonna’s adoption of Mercy James and David Banda in recent times, seems to have found no lesser fans in Jamaican reggae couple of Queen Ifrica and Tony Rebel.

Online reggae sites are abuzz with news that the firebrand Rastafarian royals gave birth to a bouncing baby boy named Malawi, Chichewa for “the flames”.

“Queen Ifrica welcomes third son-Malawi,” screams a headline on jayblessed.com, adding the royal reggae empress, also known as Ventrice ‘Fyah Muma’ Morgan, is now a ‘mumma’ 11 years less than  Rebel of If Jah fame, who is often cited as a pioneer dancehall singer-cum-deejay.

The baby named after “the land of fire” has not escaped the nose of celebrity sites in the Caribbean, famed as the “Island in the Sun”.

“However, he [Malawi] is the 14th for his reggae star father Tony Rebel,” reads a report on www.caribeancebs.com.

According to reggaetopsites.com which pools news from the Jamaican beat’s renowned websites, baby Malawi was born in Florida, US.
