To begin with, tell us more about Ramadan and how it is celebrated

Ramadan is the holy month in the Islamic calendar when all Muslims in the world are asked to fast. The sick and the elderly are exempted from fasting during this month. During this period wealthy people are expected to share with the less-privileged part of the wealth accumulated in the past 11 months. Ramadan is celebrated with great joy while Iftar is described as one of the religious observances of the fasting month and is often done at community level, with people gathering to break the fast together.

What is the significance of Iftar?

It is the food used by Muslims when breaking the fast. It is also described as free food given to Muslims who are fasting—a fast breaking dinner. In Islam, it is believed that feeding someone Iftar as a form of charity is rewarding. People like to have Iftar at home with all family members and Iftar parties are also arranged by mosques. According to Prophet Muhammed, you should first break your fast with something sweet or with a prayer. Many break their fasting by eating and saying one of the surahs in the Qu’ran.

Are there any special places for Ramadan prayers and Iftar?

Traditionally, Ramadan is held at village Mosques for those who have or will be performing the evening prayers. At the Mosque, a buffet is prepared by local residents at which all are welcome to break their fast together.

Before the Iftar, there must be as signal—such as beating of a drum—to begin the Sungari. Firing of several cannons (makombola) at the central business district is also used to mark the beginning of Sungari.

How is Iftar performed?

Iftar is traditionally performed in the social setting of the Masjid. The country’s various ethnic food is usually served there. Depending on the people providing the meal, they may even include non-traditional foods.

Is there specific time to break the fast on a day?

Fasting Muslims should break their fast just after sun set. In the big cities, restaurants offer special meals and set menus for Iftar. Most of the menus start with soup or an appetiser called ‘Iftariye’, which consists of dates, olives and cheese.
