He said AAM and Malawi National Council of Sports (MNCS) will jointly sponsor the event to the tune of K1 million of which K600 000 ($1200) will go towards prizes.

“There will be 24 categories that will be competed for in running, jumping and throws.

“It is also at this event where we will select one athlete who will represent the country at the World Athletics Championship to be held in China on August 22,” said Phiri.

Asked how the athlete will be identified considering that there will be seven categories in the track event, the AAM president said: “We will select from a category where we stand a chance to do well at the global event.

“Previously we used to be allocated two slots for athletes to participate on solidarity, but it was reduced to one.”

The AAM president said they are hoping that for the first time, the event will produce a qualified athlete to participate at the world event.

Up-and-coming athletes include as Confederation of African Athletics Southern Africa gold medallist Mercy Malembo.
