Administrator for Karibu Ministries, Pastor Paisley Mavutula, has urged the church to help in fighting stigma associated with old age.
Mavutula was speaking last week in Lirangwe, Blantyre, where the ministry organised a luncheon for the elderly.
“These are our mothers and fathers. They looked after us when we were growing up, so it is only fair and just to return the favour as they grow up, instead of calling them witches or wizards,” he said.
According to Mavutula, the ministry conducted a survey which found that the elderly live lonely lives.
“About 78 percent of those interviewed said they feel lonely and unimportant in the eyes of many people. Some said they are looked down upon as practising witchcraft. Because of these reasons, we thought it wise to cheer them up.
“Actually, the food we brought was a contribution from our students at Karibu Academy. We want our children to realise the importance of sharing with these people,” he said.
Group Village Head Mchere thanked the ministry for the gesture.
