Trophy parade raises afcon hype

Total Energies Marketing Malawi Limited yesterday paraded the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) trophy in some streets around Blantyre to raise hype for the January tourney.

This was one of the trophy parades Total Energies, as Afcon official sponsors, is conducting in 18 countries where the company is represented and have qualified for the finals of 2022 edition in Cameroon.

The parade, which started at 8am, covered a stretch between Total Service Station  near Ryalls Hotel in Blantyre and Illovo Roundabout in Limbe.

Malawi national football team coach Meck Mwase, who participated in the parade, said it was a great motivation to see the trophy before they travel to Cameroon.

“We worked hard to reach the finals and we are happy that the trophy is finally here in Malawi.

“This is a big motivation ahead of the tournament,” he said.

Scores of on lookers rushed to get a close glimpse of the all-gold trophy while cheering and whistling as the motorcade passed by.

The continental showpiece will run from January 9 to February 6 and the Flames are in Group B alongside Africa’s top-ranked side Senegal’s Teranga Lions, Guinea’s Sylli Nationale and Zimbabwe’s Warriors.

This is the third time that the Flames have made it to the Afcon finals as they also did it in 1984 and 2010.

The parade was followed by a cocktail organised by Total Energies Marketing Malawi last evening at Amaryllis Hotel where finer details relating to the parade were expected to be unpacked.
