Truck driver dies in Nkhotakota accident

A truck driver died in a road accident in Nkhotakota after the vehicle he was driving overturned after failing to negotiate a corner on Sunday.

The driver’s assistant sustained serious injuries in the accident, according to police.

Nkhotakota Police Station traffic officer Ralph Chabwera said the accident occurred soon after midnight of Sunday at Chimkwenda Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Malengachanzi area.

The truck was travelling from Blantyre to Mzuzu loaded with soap making materials.

According to witnesses, the driver identified as Evance Nachamba (30),  failed to negotiate a corner at Chimkwenda Village, six kilometres from Nkhotakota Boma, resulting in overturning.

Said Chabwera: “We were notified about the accident after midnight on Sunday and immediately rushed to the scene where we managed to save Chance Julio [the assistant] and rushed him to Nkhotakota District Hospital.

“The driver was trapped [in the wreckage] and died three hours later.”

Management of  Blantyre-based Khalsons Transport Company, owners of the vehicle,  described Nachamba as  an energetic and hard working man.

Said an official from the company: “I can replace the truck, but for the life of the driver I cannot. I will always remember this driver and his contribution to the company.”

Julio, 25, sustained a deep cut on the forehead and multiple bruises on his left hand.

The deceased came from Machemba Village, T/A Machemba in Thyolo.

This is the  fourth fatal road accident in Nkhotakota since January this year.
