Two people, including a two-year old baby died in an accident today morning at Mwanza border when a truck belonging to Zagaf Transport smashed a stationary bus and four other saloon vehicles following brake failure.
Mwanza police spokesperson Edwin Kaunda confirmed the accident in an interview. He said the other person who died is a driver for one of the saloon vehicles operating as taxis at the border.
Kaunda further said the two died while receiving treatment at Mwanza District Hospital while six others who sustained serious injuries are admitted at the same facility.
“According to the driver of the truck Peter Hora, the brake system of his vehicle registration number BL 8023 developed a fault as he approached the border post from Mozambique and he failed to stop it.
“It then hit a stationary bus and drove outside the opposite gate to hit three other saloon vehicles operating as taxis at the border,” he explained.
Mwanza Border immigration spokesperson Pasqually Zulu said the two who died in the accident are all Malawian nationals, but they are still investigating the identities of the injured.
Meanwhile, Hora, who comes from Zammimba village in Traditional Authority (T/A) Nsamala in Balaka, is in police custody pending investigations.
