Irate residents of Nkolokoti Township in Blantyre yesterday burnt to death two men who were caught breaking into a house where they stole a plasma television set and a home theatre system.
Eyewitness Jameson Kankota said in an interview yesterday the incident happened at around 4am when people in the neighbourhood heard a cry for help from a resident.
He said: “We heard a cry for help from one of our neighbour’s house and we rushed to the scene where we found some men trying to break into the house. They were about four, but community members caught only two. Some angry residents torched them.”
Limbe Police Station spokesperson Pedzisai Zembeneko confirmed receiving a report on the incident.
He said: “It is true that two men were burnt to death in the early hours of today [Tuesday] by a mob in Nkolokoti for allegedly breaking into a house and stealing a plasma television set and a home theatre system valued at over K400 000.
“The suspects, who are yet to be identified, went to another house where they tried to break in, but they were caught and burnt to death.”
Zembeneko appealed to the public to desist from taking the law into their hands. He said suspects should be taken to police to facilitate investigations. n
