Two coaches to drill AJT championship rep Msiska

Lawn Tennis Association of Malawi (Ltam) has secured the services of two coaches; Hackson Methiwa and Egon Taschler from Italy to drill Linda Msiska ahead of Africa Junior Tennis (AJT) Championships to be staged in Pretoria, South Africa from March 9 to 18.

Msiska, who will fly to South Africa on March 6, is the only junior player selected for the continental tennis competition having impressed at the ITF/CAT Southern Africa Junior Championships that was held in the same country recently.

“Our target is to have as more professional athletes as we can. It sounds nice to the nation as whole to see that our youngsters are getting international recognition. Note that this is a big competition that if Linda impresses, she can secure sponsorship to study at the High Performance Centre in Morocco just like Chisomo Lumeta.

“As of now, we have engaged two coaches Methiwa and expatriate Taschler from Italy to prepare her for this continental tournament,” Ltam president Titani Muwalo told The Nation on Wednesday.

Taschler expressed happiness with Ltam recognition saying the arrangement shows the seriousness the association has to promote the sport in the country.

“I have been coaching Linda for some time even before Ltam approached me through Saved By Ball (SBB) agreement. But I commend Ltam for this special arrangement. The good thing is that the athlete is responding well. We just need to work on her speed,” he said.

On her part, Msiska thanked Ltam for the availability of two coaches.

“I am happy that Ltam has provided me with coaches in preparations for the tournament in South Africa. I can promise that I will do better,” she said. n
