Speaking in an interview, Eastern Region police spokesperson Joseph Sauka said the driver failed to control the vehicle and hit the offside of the road before it overturned.

He said: “Upon arrival at Chikupila, the driver lost control of the vehicle and it hit an offside of the road and due to the impact, it overturned.”

According to Sauka, the two died on spot and 33 others including the driver have been rushed to Zomba Central Hospital for treatment.

He identified the deceased two as Chrissy Chinseu and George Odinala.

Meanwhile, Sauka said police are investigating to establish the cause of the accident “but it is suspected that the driver was asleep.”

Police in the region have since appealed to drivers to refrain from driving while they are tired and to avoid carrying passengers on top of goods.
