He said: “ Mbewe was driving to Lilongwe from Mvera with an unknown number of passengers on board. He skidded onto the opposite lane while negotiating a corner and collided with the saloon which was heading to Mvera with one passenger, Chilabade, on board.”

Kaponda said both the deceased died on the spot and eight passengers from the Scania sustained serious injuries.

He said five of the eight were taken to Dowa District Hospital while three are at Mvera Mission Hospital waiting to be sent to the district hospital.

Said Kaponda: “Nine other passengers from the truck were treated at Chezi Hospital for minor injuries. The saloon was extensively damaged while the scania truck had its windscreen damaged.”

He said Sokani was an inmate convicted to four years imprisonment with hard labour (IHL) for illegal connection of electricity and he had only served a year.

“Up to now it is not known how he left Maula Prison,” said Kaponda. n
