Salima Police spokesperson Jacob Khembo identified the two as Akim Tongole, 22, from Tongole Village in Traditional Authority (T/A) Tsabango in Lilongwe and Saidi Brown, 21, from Lodzanyama Village in T/A Tambala in Dedza.

People usually go to the lake to celebrate Mother’s Day

He said:“They both travelled from Lilongwe to celebrate Mother’s Day with friends at Senga Bay where they started swimming in the lake.

“The two drowned in the waters and their friends noticed they were missing after a day and reported the matter to respective relatives.”

Khembo said Tongole’s body was recovered on the same day while Brown’s body was found the following day after it was seen floating.

Khembo said the bodies were taken to Salima District Hospital for postmortem where it was established that the deaths were due to suffocation.

The bodies have since been taken to their respective homes for burial.

Meanwhile, police in the district are advising the public to always exercise caution when swimming during celebrations.
