Kanengo Police Station spokesperson Esther Mkwanda on Wednesday confirmed the deaths, explaining that the accident happened around noon and involved a Japanese International Cooperation Agency (Jica) vehicle.
She said the deceased are Leon Sumbi Benedicto from Mwachopa Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Chitukula in Lilongwe District and Victoria John, 31, from Chanika Village, T/A Makata in Blantyre.
Mkwanda identified the driver as Kingsley Malizani from Chilimba Village, T/A Nsamala in Balaka District.
The accident happened when Malizani was on his way to pick up officers who were scheduled to land at KIA.
The accident was a dampener to the spirits of some singing and dancing netball fans who were geared to giving Malawi’s netballers, the Queens, a hearty welcome back home, after their participation at the 2015 Netball World Cup (NWC) competition in Sydney, Australia. A wailing woman survivor of the accident expressed shock at seeing the bodies of acquaintances with whom she had been chatting moments earlier on their way to a funeral at a nearby village.
Police said Mkwanda is in their custody pending a court appearance to answer charges of causing death by reckless driving.
