Two Mzuzu DJs in Chill national finals

Carlsberg Malawi has selected two DJs from Mzuzu to represent the Northern Region in the national finals of Chill DJ Competition slated for August.

The two—Ernie the DJ and Ghetto Fresh—triumphed during the regional finals at the New Choma Bar in Mzuzu on Friday night.

The city’s four finest DJs, who qualified from the first round of the competition in May, were given 15 minutes each to show their skills on the sound console.

While fun-seekers were rooted to the dancefloor, the DJs were being judged on crowd response, creativity and levels of skill.

And after mid-night, the DJs’ fate remained in the hands of the judges who had to decide on who to proceed to the next level of the competition.

In an interview afterwards, Carlsberg senior brands manager (alcoholic beverages) Twikale Chirwa said Mzuzu hosted one of the best regional finals.

“Standards are high in Mzuzu and Blantyre where the finals were a cracker. The top two DJs from Mzuzu are not very far from those we got in Blantyre. So, DJs in Lilongwe have to prepare and do their homework right,” he said.

Regional finals in Lilongwe will take place on July 8 with the national finals expected to take place in the first week of August.

Chirwa said they want the national finals to be an outside event rather a club thing as has been the case previously.

“People should expect a big event in a city to be announced later. We want it to be bigger than never before.

“We expect to bring in one of the best DJs in Malawi and add in one or two surprise activities,” he said.

Ernie, who was seeded for his outstanding performance in the last competition, said he was happy to represent the region one  more time.

He said he expects to bring the trophy to Mzuzu this year due to the experience he has acquired over the years.

The other DJs who competed are Ro and Ken. DJ Logic did not turn up for the event.
