Two police officers in Chitipa District have been arrested along with a security guard on suspicion that they robbed a businessperson of K450 000 at Mpelachisa Rest House in the district.

Northern Region police spokesperson Maurice Chapola and National Police spokesperson Rhoda Manjolo on Tuesday confirmed the arrest of the two officers, Sergeant Khudza  Kaludzu and Constable  Mphatso Zinjani and the guard Jastone Simbowe.

arrestThe three, alongside five other suspects, on Sunday night allegedly used a duplicate key kept by Simbowe to gain entry into the rest house room where Meston Chiona,30, of Mwandenga Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Mwakawoko in Karonga District was lodging. They allegedly assaulted Chiona with a big wooden stick before going away with the money.

Said Manjolo: “He was left lying in a pool of blood and had to be rushed to the hospital by sympathisers. He is still battling for his life on a hospital bed.”

The development comes after two other police officers were arrested in Mzuzu for allegedly aiding illegal ivory traders.

Manjolo said it is unfortunate that some officers get involved in crime.

Said Manjolo: “ The police do not condone criminal behaviour by officers. We are warning any officer who gets involved in crime, that the police will not shield anyone.”
