Two prisoners selected to Luanar

Two prisoners from Maula Prison are among the 896 students selected to the Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (Luanar).

According to the selection list released by Luanar, Thomas Chafera and William Kayala have been selected to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree in agronomy at the institution. Chafera, who was convicted by the Lilongwe First Grade Magistrate’s Court in July 2010, scored 16 points in the Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) examinations and is currently serving an eight-year armed robbery sentence. He is due for release this year.
Kayala, also scored 16 points and has been on remand since May 2014 waiting to answer charges of armed robbery at Nkukula Court in Lumbadzi, Lilongwe. Malawi Prisons Service (MPS) spokesperson Evance Phiri confirmed the selection of the two.
He said, in the event that a convict has been selected to a public university, MPS Department of Education request the university to reserve a place for the convict until they complete their sentence.
