A man and his sister travelling to South Africa  (SA) were left stranded at Mwanza Border on Friday after a man whom they were travelling with robbed them of K200 000.

The two—Donnex Kaliati, 32, and his sister Merlia Kaliati, 21—said they wanted to join their brother who works in South Africa. The two come from Kabwere Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Mwambo in Zomba District.

Donnex and Meria were assisted by social welfare officer Kathumba (R)

In an interview, Donnex said they trusted this stranger because last year he brought them goods from their brother.

“The man told us that our brother wanted us to join him in South Africa and he would secure jobs for us,” he said.

Donnex said they left Zomba on Monday to meet the man in Blantyre, adding that the three used a minibus to get to the border.

He said when they were close to the border, the man asked them to alight from the vehicle while he went to buy foreign currency. He did not show up again.

Police referred the victims to district social welfare office where assistant social welfare officer Henderson Kathumba provided them money for their return home. He advised people to be careful with strangers especially where money is involved.
