Kawale Police in Lilongwe are keeping in custody two women suspected of mocking a 13-year-old girl with albinism in Kaliyeka Township in the district.
Lilongwe Police Station spokesperson Kingsley Dandaula identified the two as Olivia Mangani, 26, from Mtiya Village and Beatrice Chintondo, 35, from Mkando Village, in Traditional Authority (T/A) Mulumbe in Zomba.
“The girl with albinism is a Standard Seven learner at Henliz Primary School. She was on her way to a local market when she heard the women saying she was worth some money if sold. The girl explained the issue to her mother who reported it to Kawale Police,” said Dandaula, adding that the women were charged with conduct likely to cause breach of peace.
Police identified the girl from Kaliyeka as Lillian Tongani.
Lilongwe Police are warning the public that the law shall take its course on any person issuing inhumane threats towards persons with albinism. n
