“During the last search, the police and the people went up to Mudi River where Nasolo flows into. The people returned having reached somewhere in Mpemba without finding any body. They only returned because rains had started and they wanted to avoid another accident,” she said.

Divala said the police have communicated to their fellows along Mudi River up to Shire River to also conduct a thoroughly search for the two as there are prospects that they could have gone as far as that.

She said the missing persons are Saineti Mviza, a 64-year-old man from Mwambang’ombe Village in Traditional Authority (T/A) Malemia’s area in Zomba and three-year-old Fatima Enock from Mthiramanja Village, T/A Chikumbu in Mulanje.

Divala said the body ofa third person, 14-year-old Esther Mviza from Mwambang’ombe Village in Traditional Authority Malemia’s area in Zomba was found nearby as it was stuck to a log.

In the meantime, police have appealed to people to avoid constructing their houses and business benches along rivers as part of a safety measure to avoid occurrences of this nature from happening.

Apart from washing away the three people, the rain also left several households in Ndirande destitute after their houses collapsed destroying various household properties.
