UDF demands Mbendera’s resignation
UDF presidential candidate in the just-ended May 20 Tripartite Elections, Atupele Muluzi on Friday gave chairperson of the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Justice Maxon Mbendera until 5pm to explain anomalies on result sheets or resign for ‘failing Malawians’.
Speaking at a press conference held at his Nyambadwe guesthouse, the United Democratic Front (UDF) torchbearer alleged that MEC is contravening electoral laws by denying his party monitors access to duly signed summary of the final results of the poll at each polling station.
But MEC spokesperson Sangwani Mwafulirwa dismissed the assertions as baseless and untrue.
A visibly concerned Muluzi described the just-ended elections as the worst managed polls in the 50-year history of the country.
He said irregularities that marred the polls are proof that MEC had failed to hold credible elections.
“Besides that is failure by MEC to address concerns raised by electoral stakeholders, including the tampering of the results. Some of the constituencies whose results have been tampered with include Balaka West, Balaka North, Balaka Central, Zomba Chingale, Zomba Nsondole, Zomba Changalume and Blantyre South East, Blantyre Rural East and Blantyre Malabada,” said Muluzi.
Mwafulirwa said the commission is yet to receive the letter containing the demands.
He, however, described the demand as laughable, saying MEC has always been transparent in the handling of the elections.
