UDF sponsors all aspirants
The United Democratic Front (UDF) has announced that it will pay nomination fees for all its parliamentary and Local Government Elections candidates for the May 20 elections.
UDF secretary general Kandi Padambo confirmed the development yesterday.
Said Padambo: “Yes, Honourable Atupele Muluzi made the announcement. The candidates are being sponsored by the party because we need their commitment.”
He could not give the amount the party will fork but an online publication Nyasatimes pegged at K45 million. Padambo could not also explain the source of the money.
The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) announced that presidential candidates will pay K1 million while those aspiring to contest for the 193 parliamentary seats will pay K200 000 (males) and K150 000 (female).
Candidates vying for Local Government Elections’ 462 seats are expected to pay K20 000 (male) and K15 000 (female).
Atupele is reported to have made the announcement in Lilongwe on Wednesday when he presented certificates to the aspiring candidates from Central Region.
“I want to assure you that I will do anything possible to support you and that we should win this election,” he is reported as saying.
This is obviously the monies papa fleeced from us between 1994-2004. That’s the only thing he knew how to do. The distinction between Bakili, Bingu, APM and JB is one without a difference.
P.S. Chakwera is an unknown quantity. But I wouldn’t hold out much hope that he’ll lead us out of this mess. MCP should have died long time ago with Kamuzu anyway!

With the low package that the MPs are getting,where has Atupele who has only worked as an MP since 2004 obtained MK45 Million? Are these the left overs from the MK1.7 billion Donor Money that the Muluzi senior diverted into his Zomba NBM personal account? By the where are we on this MK1.7 billion Muluzi case? Are we serious as a country that a simple case as this one can take 10 years to be finalised??????????????????/
