LGUoM honorary secretary Connie Karuku yesterday said the 2018 edition will be hosted at Lilongwe Golf Club (LGC) this Saturday and Sunday.

She said five golf clubs will participate in this year’s event and these are Country Club Limbe, Kasasa, Nchalo, Blantyre and hosts LGC.

“This year’s event is special. We have partnered with Umodzi Park as the overall sponsor of the whole tournament. They have taken over from Bollore Africa  Logistics [formerly SDV] who were, until 2016, the sole sponsor for this tournament for over 15 years.

“We will also have a junior girls` category,” said Karuku.

She said among other things, Umodzi Park are offering 13 prizes for all categories, accommodation (bed and breakfast) and shuttle services for visiting lady golfers.

“They are also offering a welcome cocktail on Saturday evening in the Afroma Terrace Bar, luncheon on Sunday afternoon by the pool side as well as snacks and refreshments for golfers on the course.

“We are taking this as a Mother`s Day treat. They are spoiling us,” said the LGUoM official.

“Umodzi Park have also  been sponsoring golf at club level and they are considering to proceed as ICGC partner in the coming years, but that`s a discussion we will have after next week.”

Umodzi Park said they are using the tournament to reach out to the Malawian community.

“We are involved in various corporate social responsibility activities such as the Nation Publication Limited [NPL] Mother`s Fun Run. We have also adopted Kalimabwera School [in the outskirts of Lilongwe] to ensure quality education,” reads part of the statement.

The tournament is competed for by all golf clubs in the country and the main prize is a floating trophy in form of a wooden crocodile. The winning club keeps the crocodile trophy for a year.

Blantyre Sports Club (BSC) are the defending champions having won the title last year.
