Organisers of the Urban Music Party (UMP) festival Nde’feyo Entertainment and Prime Time media have announced incorporation of the life-time achievers awards in the 2013 UMP awards.

UMP announced this year’s UMP festival awards programme a week ago with only urban music artists, Djs and journalists who have put a priority in promoting urban music to be awarded.

In a statement released Sunday, UMP said they have included life-time achievers on the award list and they will be recognised together with musicians, DJs and journalists at a gala party scheduled for Independence day.

“UMP will also award life-time achievers in urban music. The lifetime achiever award recognises people who have made a special pioneering contribution to the industry and observable impact to the evolution of the local urban arts sector,” reads part of the statement.

UMP’s Ken Limwame said the purpose of the life-time achievers award is to honour people who started or developed Malawi’s urban music industry and culture. He said the award aims at encouraging current players in urban music to put an extra gear in promoting the genre.

“We have to honour people who started or developed Malawi’s urban music industry and culture to be where it is now. We feel, this will encourage more excellence for the current players,” said Limwame while revealing that the award will go two individuals to be identified by the organisers.

Past winners of the award are Michael “Dynamike” Munthali and Faith Chibale.

Meanwhile, the venue for the festival which is being sponsored by Airtel Money, GOtv and Star Radio, has been changed from the Royal Palm Hotel to Lucky Luciano’s ground in CI, Blantyre. It will run from 10 o’clock in the morning to six o’clock in the evening on Independence day.
