Umpires boycott LDNL games

Umpires boycotted Central Region Netball League (LDNL) games on Sunday at Kamuzu Institute for Sports (KIS) due to outstanding dues.

The umpires shunned the games to force the Central Region Netball Committee (CRNC) to pay them K49 000 (about $196) they were supposed to have received during the Presidential Cup.

Both LDNL general secretary Zachariah Kasakula who was at the court and Central Region Umpire Committee (CRUC) chairperson Madano Tepeteya confirmed the news.

“During the regional Presidential Cup games we were given K400 (about $1.60) per game, but at the national finals, we learnt from the Netball Association of Malawi (NAM) that we were supposed to receive K800 (about $3.20) per game.

“I am having pressure as chairperson from my fellow umpires, that is why I have agreed that we should shun all the games until we get the outstanding dues,” said Tepeteya.

Kasakula described the development as bad for netball.

Katengeza and his regional treasurer Chunga Kalirani confirmed the issue about the underpayment.

After the league failed to start, Model Sisters played a friendly game with Green Sisters, which the latter won 12-10.
