United Nations (UN) resident coordinator Mia Seppo has urged young people to take specific actions to contribute to the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

She says there are several ways through which youths can do this, including using social media to talk about women’s rights or climate change, harmful cultural practices like child marriages, deforestation and poor waste disposal.

Wants youths to act on SDGs: Seppo

She was speaking on Friday evening at Natural Resources College (NRC) in Lilongwe during a music show organised to raise awareness on the SDGs among students.

The UN envoy further observed that by ensuring that they buy products made in Malawi, youths will be contributing to employment creation and economic growth in the country.

In his remarks, NRC acting campus director Grey Matita said youths are crucial in achieving the SDGs because they comprise more than half of Malawi’s population.

He, therefore, challenged the students to be the ambassadors of the SDGs and talk about them to others wherever they go.

One of the students, Tionge Chilima, said they cannot ignore the SDGs but take part in creating a better universe. n
