UN salutes Malawi on gays
United Nations (UN) has saluted Malawi for swiftly dropping all charges against two Lilongwe based men accused of engaging in homosexuality.
Two weeks ago, police arrested 19-year-old Cuthbert Kulemeka and Kelvin Gonani, 39, on suspicion that they committed an offence under Section 153 of the Penal Code.
But government on Friday ordered the release of the suspects and dropped the charges levelled against them.
In a statement issued yesterday, the UN welcomed government’s decision to drop the charges and further uphold its moratorium not to arrest, detain, charge or prosecute persons engaged in consensual same-sex activity.
However, the body has urged government to put in place strict procedures to ensure that the Malawi Police Service (MPS) does not defy the moratorium.
Malawi suspended enforcement of anti-gay laws, among them Sections 137(a), 153, 154 and 156 of the Penal Code pending a High Court review of their constitutionality, but this has not been concluded, according to Human Rights Watch (HRW).
On Sunday, the two freed suspected homosexuals, through their lawyer Khumbo Soko, hinted at pushing government to launch a criminal inquiry into the conduct of the community policing members who they claim physically assaulted them and ransacked the home of one of them. n
I would assume that all Parliamentarians are standing up in the Chinese built Parliament which looks like a Fertilizer Shed and beating their chests with both fists!.. This is a lost country.. They are spending time arresting men they suspect were doing their own private business in their house while 3 million are starving, many are dying in the hospitals because of no medicine, no electricity and water, no roads etc etc while begging for Donor Aid!
Malawi should be colonized for another 100 years to relieve the West of the begging. They know nothing about self governance. They are only a bother to the rest of us! Now they are asking big Visa Fees to enter that Hell of a country..for what? To be robbed or killed?..
Colonization again is the only Answer for this FAILED STATE!
