Unicef, EU hail local partners on Wash response

The United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef) in Malawi with financial support from the European Union (EU) and other donors has responded to the immediate needs of displaced people in the country with prepositioned emergency supplies for health, nutrition and water, sanitation and hygiene (Wash).

IMG_186043260369091 (1)Unicef Wash programme has responded to the most affected districts of Nsanje, Chikwawa, Phalombe and Zomba.

During a visit to Bodza Camp in Chikwawa, EU Ambassador Marchel Gerrmann said the EU in partnership with Unicef are reaching out to 7 000 people with more than $30 million (about K14 billion).

Said Gerrmann: “EU made available $800 000 [about K376 million] immediately the declaration of disaster was made in order to prevent diseases from spreading and helping in water and sanitation.”

Unicef head of water and sanitation Paulos Workneh said they are looking at the issue of other water-borne diseases to ensure camps are safe to live in.
