Azam Tigers’ surge in form, which continued over the weekend with a convincing win and draw, is due to the Kau Kau’s unity of purpose, key striker Peter Kasonga said yesterday.

Kasonga was on target as the Tigers came from behind to draw 1-1 with Red Lions in Zomba on Sunday, a day after also putting his name on the score sheet when thrashing Airborne Rangers 3-0 at  Kamuzu Stadium.

Tigers, who scored the other goals on Saturday through Bright Munthali and captain Malumbo Gondwe, have built up on their surprise 2014 Standard Bank Knockout Trophy finals. Kasonga, formerly of Mzuzu United, is not surprised.

“Unity of purpose is what is pushing us through. We have always worked hard, but you cannot succeed where there is no harmony. The desire is to finish the season on fourth place. I am sure we will,” Kasonga said yesterday in a telephone interview.

The four points took the Tigers’ tally to 30 points from 20 games.

Elsewhere, Civo United also jumped to fifth also on 31 points from 20 matches.

The Oscar Kaunda side Civo stepped up their good second-round start with a 2-1 beating of Chitowe Stadium hosts Mafco on Sunday.

Up the table, Big Bullets still occupies third place on 40 points; only goal aggregate separating them from second-placed Blue Eagles. Both teams were not in action over the weekend.

Moyale Barracks jumped from second to top of the table after punishing Kamuzu Barracks 4-0 on Sunday through leading scorer Deus Nkutu’s hat-trick and another effort from second top scorer Gastin Simkonda who has 11 goals; three behind his teammate.

At the bottom, Karonga United still anchor the table on 10 points from 21 games, three points behind Chikwawa United whereas Blantyre United are third from bottom after losing 2-1 to Airborne Rangers on Sunday.
