Unsafe abortions on the increase

Listen to this article

We would like to comment on an article titled as above that appeared in The Nation of July 15 2016. First, the title of the article is meant to instill fear in the people of Malawi in general and the government in particular. It is intended to blackmail the government into accepting to pass into law the Abortion Bill. The authors of this article have come together and put their weight behind its drafters. Since they are gynecologists and are well versed in this subject, Malawians will be compelled to accept the proposed amendment to the abortion law.

However, the question is why have these accredited gynecologists teamed up to support this? Is it because they are well versed in the subject and claim to have carried out a research? Their support does not lie just in their being experts on the subject, but also because of the financial benefit they will get when the proposed amendment is carried as more women will seek their services than they have ever done before.

We wish to refer them to one of their own Dr. Bernard Nathanson, an obstetrician and gynecologist, who led the pro-abortion movement in the United States of America in the 1960s. To achieve their goal, they had to literally lie.

They fed the media with false information and made sure such lies were repeated. They said whatever information

(figures) they gave to the media was backed by research when in fact all statistical figures were fabricated. Figures

in thousands were presented as tens of thousands, those in tens of thousands were presented as hundreds of thousands. Why did Dr. Nathanson and colleagues do this? He confesses that they were doing this for money. He says it was “simple arithmetic at $300 a time 1.55 million abortions meant the industry generating $500 million annually, of which most went into the pockets of the physicians doing the abortions”.

Our physicians in Malawi have just copied this strategy in order to convince Malawians. The article in the paper talks of “unsafe abortion”; which suggests that there is safe abortion somewhere. We would like to ask, what does the term “Safe Abortion” means? When you look up the meanings of the words in the dictionary, you find it is wrong to use

The two words together. The word “Safe” means, in the Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English, New Edition;

out of danger, not threatened by harm, not able to be hurt, protected. The word “Abort” means: failing to reach the result

that was intended,  unsuccessful ; we may add “the abrupt stoppage of a process.”

The meanings of the words are contradictory, which suggests they cannot be used together. By extension we can’t talk of abortion as being safe. In any case, when they talk of safe abortion, for whom is it safe?

From the moment a woman becomes pregnant, we start talking of two distinct lives, that of the mother and that of the expected child. From
