UP to field 50 parliamentary candidates

Umodzi Party (UP) has lamented that financial constraints have forced the party to field only 50 parliamentary candidates out of 193 constituencies in the country.

Speaking in an interview on Tuesday, UP secretary general Edgar Tembo said the party wanted to field as many candidates as possible, but finances would not permit it.

UP says it is a national party that it is determined to take over government come the elections.

The party held a convention at Motel Paradise in Blantyre on February 1 2014 where it elected John Chisi as president.

“It is only the party that is in government or has ever been in government that can manage to field candidates in all constituencies.

“People’s Party [PP] is able to do that because it is in government.

Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and United Democratic Front (UDF) can also afford to do that because they were in government [before],” said Tembo.
