Organisers of the Urban Music Party (UMP) Nde’feyo Entertainment, have lined up a series of shows in the build-up to the 2013 urban festival in July. The whole idea is to promote playing of Malawian urban music at social gatherings locally.

“The first UMP night will take place on May 4, at Blue Elephant starting from 8pm with performances by celebrated urban artists Blakjak, Armstrong, GD, Nesnes and Gwamba. Also on the menu are four Deejays namely Joy Nathu, JOEY, Ndefeyo’s Kari P and DJ Fernando from Portugal with Mphatso Chaluluka popularly known as Junior C as MC.

“To make it more exciting, exceptional and animated, there will be a two-hour exclusive local music play, particularly urban, just to underpin playing of Malawi’s own music in clubs, social gatherings and on radios, consequently promoting artists and their music,” said Maurice Nkawihe of Nde’feyo Entertainment in a statement.

The UMP comes back after two years in hibernation, and the comeback show will be staged in Blantyre on Sunday, July 7 at Royal Palm Hotel.

Said to Nkawihe, “The idea is spawned from the fact that, unlike other territories, Malawian music, as noted by UMP organising team, is not given much play in clubs and other social avenues.

Other UMP nights will follow on dates to be announced in Lilongwe, Zalewa Roadblock and Mzuzu just before the UMP main festival.

Hatched in 2009, UMP is a platform to celebrate and promote Malawian urban arts and culture thereby contributing to country’s socioeconomic growth by involving performances by various Malawian celebrated urban artists as well as up-and-coming ones, UMP Top Model, games and competitions of various forms, among others.
