Malawi Vice-President Saulos Chilima has asked Malawians to be tolerant of one another to maintain peace in the country.

Chilima was speaking on Saturday at Civo Stadium in Lilongwe where he led thousands of people in prayers organised by the Public Affairs Committee (PAC) to mark the United Nations (UN) International Day of Peace.

He said Malawi is a peace-loving and God-fearing nation, as such, “without tolerance, peace can elude and leave an age of endless conflicts”.

“Conflicts are inevitable where there are people, but tolerance is the only way such conflicts can be overcome and give room for peace to reign,” Chilima said.

The Veep said as one way of championing peace in the world, Malawi will continue sending peacekeeping troops in conflict-prone countries.

“It’s good to note that Malawi has contributed significantly towards peacekeeping in countries where there were conflicts and we will continue with this noble cause,” he said.

UN resident coordinator Mia Seppo commended Malawi for taking a bold stance towards promoting peace, saying the country is among the few countries where there is peace and harmony.

PAC chairperson the Reverend Felix Chingota said the theme for this year, ‘Building a Peaceful and Better Malawi Through Inclusivity’, was chosen to provide Malawians with a topic for reflection.

He noted that without proper understanding of oneness, a nation cannot develop.
