All work no play makes Jack a dull boy, so the saying goes.

And Vice-President Saulos Chilima will Saturday afternoon take time off his crammed diary of running matters of the State to take part in a Central Zone Basketball League (Cezobal) fund-raising tournament at Civo Court in Lilongwe.

The veep hopes to lead his team to victory

The tournament, dubbed ‘Build a court @ Civo’ is aimed at raising about K25 million for the construction of a new court at Civo Stadium.

Chilima, who was a top player during his youth days, will captain Civo Bax who will face Diplomats team and selected corporate sides. The main game is scheduled to start at 4.30pm.

In preparations for the tournament, the Veep trained with established basketballers at Blantyre Youth Centre (BYC) on Monday where he turned on a five-star display.

His press officer Pilirani Phiri said: “The Vice-President is geared for the game. He has been training and looks forward to leading his team to victory.

“More importantly, he wants to help the basketball community realise its dream of having a modern court at Civo Stadium. His participation is also an encouragement to the youth and all Malawians to participate in sports or exercise on regular basis as he believes that the quality of one’s life is related to the quality of his or her health.”

Cezobal general secretary Peter Gomani said they were almost through with preparations of the event.

“The curtain-raising games will start at around midday and we expect the Vice-President to arrive at between 2pm and 3pm. He will inspect the place where we are planning to construct a new court and then paravions of the companies that have helped us.

“We also recognise the role that government has played in this exercise, especially logistically by providing security,” he said.
