The rags-to-riches story manifested its true meaning yesterday when a vegetable vendor Andrew Jordan hit the jackpot to win K51 million in sports betting in Blantyre.

With a stake of K150, the 28-year-old predicted correctly 23 football matches at the weekend to become an overnight millionaire and the second biggest PremierBet winner in the country after Lajeshan Jannat, who grabbed K109 million in April.

Prior to his fortune, the Machinjiri Township resident was selling vegetables at Chikapa Trading Centre, making at least K30 000 per month since he abandoned the “non-profitable” bicycle commuter service business at his home village in Traditional Authority Lundu in Chikwawa.

The secondary school drop-out, who stays alone, was lost for words to describe his excitement after receiving his cheque at Blantyre PremierBet Shop.

“It feels like dreaming; all my life I have never thought that one day I could get so much money,” said the soft-spoken businessperson while holding his old-model mobile phone.

However, after using part of his fortune to buy new clothes, which he wore during the cheque presentation, Jordan could not explain what he would do with his money.

“I am yet to think about it. However, I believe buying a house would be a better option,” he said.

PremierBet assistant training manager Joseph Malonda said they are happy that the company continues to transform lives.

“This is the second record winner so far and it is quite satisfying to hear that he was a small-scale businessperson. This is the kind of story that we love to hear as a company,” he said.
