The country’s veteran basketball players will taste the inaugural K700 000 (about $2 800) Nedbank Tournament at Blantyre Youth Centre (BYC) on Saturday, the Basketball Association of Malawi (Basmal) has announced.

The event, which will involve veteran basketball players from the age of 35 and above, was supposed to start on April 23, but failed in respect of the 30-day mourning period for the late president Bingu wa Mutharika.

However, Basmal vice-president Ben Mlasaanthu said on Tuesday that the old guard will finally scour away rust and relive their prime days on the courts this Saturday.

“We are trying to bring excitement back where the old guard will showcase their skills and let the young ones learn from them,” said Mlasaanthu.

While thanking Nedbank for bankrolling the event, Mlasaanthu also urged the basketball fraternity in the country to open accounts with the bank so that the bank should continue to support basketball.
