Vic Marley memorial on Saturday

For the second time since Vic Marley’s death on May 24 2005, fellow artists will hold a show in his memory this Saturday at Glalle Gardens opposite Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe.

The first memorial show was held in 2007.

Led by his close ally Anne Matumbi, the show will bring together artists such as Nepman, Skeffa Chimoto, Dan Lu, Malinga, Lulu, Fredokiss, Blasto, Toriah, Don Taz, Lambani Dube, Komplex, Reptiler and Vic Marley’s younger brother, Star Marley.

In an interview, Matumbi said Vic Marley, in his short stint in music, created a niche for himself and served as an inspiration to young musicians who were not sure of making a breakthrough by playing their own kind of music.

To be remembered in Lilongwe: Vic Marley

He said: “If you look at the style of many young musicians coming through now, you will see that they modelled their style on Vic Marley’s touch.

“That tells you the influence that he has had in this industry. As such, we thought it was only befitting that we honour his art in this way.”

Matumbi said although Vic Marley enjoyed respect and support from both within and outside the music industry, it has been difficult for them to organise an annual show because of financial limitations.

In a separate interview, Star Marley commended the organisers, stating that it has been long since his deceased brother’s life was celebrated through music.

“I also salute the organisers for offering me an opportunity to be part of the show. It will accord me a chance to pay my tribute in a special way,” he said.

During the show, sponsored by, among others, Prophet David Mbewe, Mikozi Network, Epic Lounge and SkyLine International, there will be a singing competition for young artists. The best performer of a cover for one of Vic Marley’s songs will get K50 000 cash.

Vic Marley, born Victor Kunje, rose to prominence with his out-of-the-box lyrical presentation, his unique dancehall touch and the freestyle attitude he executed his art. His smash hits Ndikadzamwalira and Traffic Police earned him a status in the eyes of who admired his artistic prowess.
