Angry villagers in Nkhotakota last Saturday night smashed a vehicle they believed was in the village for evil intentions, police have confirmed.
Nkhunga Police spokesperson Austin Kaunda said the vehicle was found in Maliwa Village, Traditional Authority Kanyenda around 10 pm.
It was not immediately clear whose vehicle it was.
“When villagers saw the vehicle at that odd hour, they became suspicious, mobilised themselves and mounted a roadblock,” said Kaunda.
He said when the vehicle arrived where the roadblock was mounted, its occupants ran away, leaving it in the hands of the villagers who vandalised it.
Kaunda said seeds of cannabis sativa (chamba) were found in the vehicle and police suspect that it had carried Indian hemp which may have been taken by the same mob.
The publicist said the owner of the vehicle told police that he had left the car with his young brother who is still missing and that he had no idea of why it was found in the village.
