The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has said voter registration will begin on October 27 at 376 centres in Mzimba District.

M’mbelwa District Council MEC clerk Elias Nyirenda has since urged leaders of different political parties to mobilise their followers to register.

“We are going to deploy two teams in each centre so that those who did not register for national identity cards [IDs] should have a chance to register. Those who failed to get IDs because they were not out are asked to bring forms they completed during registration for the IDs,” he said.

Nyirenda said the campaign for voter registration would be conducted through bonanzas, political rallies, in collaboration with National Initiative for Civic Education (Nice).

M’mbelwa District Council Multiparty Liaison Committee chairperson Thomas Chirwa, who is also Mzimba district commissioner,  said the committee will promote voter registration messages.

He said the committee exists to ensure peaceful, free and fair elections.

The committee highlighted the importance of promoting female participation in political positions during the May 21 2019 Tripartite Elections.

ActionAid programmes officer Harry Chikandira said the organisation is ensuring that women and girls are empowered and elected into top positions.

Registration for the May 21 2019 Tripatite Elections will end on November 9 this year.
