VP calls for unity among Malawians

Vice-President Saulos Chilima has asked people in the country to be united and focused in the run-up to the May 21 2019 Tripartite Elections.

Chilima, who is set to lead the newly formed United Transformation Movement (UTM) in the elections, said this during UTM’s Northern Region launch rally at Mzuzu Stadium upper ground on Saturday.

He said the road to 2019 elections will not be easy and that Malawians need to remain peaceful by avoiding acts of political violence during the campaign trail.

Chilima said the country’s democratic principles should be consolidated from all political spheres. To achieve this, he said tolerance is essential.

He said: “The people who fought for the country’s democracy were united and had the spirit of love within them. They demonstrated total patriotism to the well-being of the country politically.”

Chilima also urged Malawians to be dedicated to hard work to improve the socio-economic development of the country.

The gathering observed a minute’s silence to honour the souls of Malawians who fought for the country’s democracy.

Speaker of Parliament Richard Msowoya, who was present at the rally, urged all Malawians to get registered for them to express their democratic right to vote in the elections.

This was the third launch rally UTM has held after the first one at Masintha ground in Lilongwe on July 21 and Njamba Freedom Park in Blantyre on July 30.
